"It is important for me to be nice and polite and funny," says Artis. He is succeeding, as people who know him, from VLP staff to co-workers at McDonald's describe him as a "great guy," with a great sense of humor and a real pleasure to know.
Artis was born right here in Florida, where he lived with his mother and two siblings until "I decided it was time to live independently, and here I am!" Artis lives in an apartment with two roommates, where he receives Supported Living Services from VLP. He has worked at McDonald's for 15 years but he must say the piped in music "drives me crazy." Otherwise, he enjoys music, especially hip-hop. He loves playing video games. He is the self-declared "number one fan" of the New England Patriots, in fact his "bucket list" consists of visiting New England and meeting Tom Brady. His other great desire is for a Lexus, preferably red. He would "make do" with a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord.
Artis is a Special Olympics athlete in volleyball and basketball. He is the proud winner of a gold medal as his volleyball team, the Spikers were the State Division IV Volleyball Champions at this year’s competition in Orlando. A VLP staff member says of Artis "he is the kind of athlete who adheres to Vince Lombardi’s famous theory, it’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up and Artis is always ready to jump right back in the game. He is a joy to watch." Artis explains why he strives to be" nice and polite and funny," " People look at people and think they can judge them. I don't let that happen in my life; it's what's inside that counts." We wish Artis continued success and hope all his dreams come true.
